There is new legislation which requires all homeowners receiving the Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive this exemption. Homeowners will NOT have to register to receive the 2013 STAR exemption, but must register by December 31, 2013 to receive the STAR exemption in 2014 and in subsequent years.
Homeowners will only have to register once, as the Tax Department will monitor homeowners’ eligibility in future years based on the information provided during registration.
